" SOCIO ECOLOGICAL PROJECT AMARU MAYU"
ASPRIDEQ´ Asociación Civil sin Fines de Lucro para la Protección, Reserva y Desarrollo del Q´oñec
NGOD - MANU - PERÚ
1.- PRESENTATION.-
This project represents an initiative of NGOD ASPRIDEQ´ MANU for the protection, conservation and sustainable management of the vulnerable ecosystem of Amaru Mayu, Buffer zone of Manu National park, which has a fragility that represents a preoccupation of world order because it is constituted itself like ecological reserve, in this current refuge of threatened endemic species in danger of extinction and like strict protected fragile rain forests.
The Project includes its proposal to the scope of the “Amaru Mayu Reserve” that has a transitional area between high and low jungle that offer a special condition of interest for, students, scientists, biologists, zoologists, botanists, anthropologist, tourists or other professionals (of the locality of the country or foreigners)
Finally, in the handling plan of the “Amaru Mayu Ecological Reserve” the roll that must play the investigation and tourism it is to establish the benefits that this one can contribute to the local development of the annexed communities and to all the adjacent population to this space on intervention.
The area established here by The Project is an Ecological Reserve “Lote Amaru Mayu” that has a category in which natural resources is being made handling by this institution created for such effect with the collaboration and participation of the same population that is around it, its to say that, protect not only physically and legally this forest, but includes the local populations, natives or who lives near the river with the direct and indirect participation of the involved population whose category sets out with the purpose of gradually elevating the quality of life of the communities and involving the adjacent settlers with the intervention.
At the moment in this zone we support a series of environmental problems, economic and social, due to the implementation of inadequate processes of development for the zone.
The productive activities are based generally on extractive activities and lodging, fishing and furtive hunting, which has led to the reduction of the availability of these resources, sustenance of these activities, generating that the settlers specially natives, see the resources that the Biosphere Reserve protects “like a next possibility of development”; part of the environmental limitations imposed by means (mainly ground), have problems as far as the application of operating technologies and commercialization, determining that the population has very low standards life and serious deficiency of the services of health, education and basic cleaning and others like the lack of development alternatives or leisure and unemployment that generates the constant migration of local people.
The legal modality in this way, and an interesting option of direct use, since it allows an integral handling of an area, in benefit of the adjacent communities, and as long as the use is in a plan of established handling, as this is the case, it finally gives to this legal status with the category of Amaru Mayu Ecological Reserve and the effective use that the population near make of the proposal area, for its traditional, cultural activities and economic support according to its potentiality, as well as the indirect use of the landscaping resources and the rich existing biological diversity in the area.
Among the basic preoccupations that motivated the study and the application of this proposal are: the disordered use and the irrational operation of the natural resources, the technical preoccupation around the impact of the economy market on the tropical humid forest and specially the intensive forest extraction, the necessity to reform the political economy, management and colonization of this rain forest.
The technical and legal delays of the economic, agrarian and forest politics in the zone, have caused and continue with the deforestation in alarming proportions, with massive lost of natural resources (flora and fauna), the erosion, the compaction and extinction of natural species, these are essential aspects to consider, thus it has been seen as advisable the elaboration and execution of the Socio Ecological Project Amaru Mayu, which content has as specific aims.
The Project represents an alternative and solution as opposed to the excessive exploitation of the natural resources of this mountainous zone and the consequent lose of its characteristics of natural balance that risks the animal, vegetables species lives and the quality of life of the human beings.
Also, it represents an alternative of economic development and improvement conditions of life populations that are near or annexed to the zone of intervention through supporting sustainable models which plans to execute in medium and long term and in a participate way with the settlers and authorities.
At the moment we continue making active works of physical protection (sentry post), as well as the necessary management’s for the legal protection and the development of its different activities; increase of fields of organic agriculture (donation of seeds), reforestation and others, ratings of footpaths and construction of the essential structures for the unfolding of the project integrally. the activities that the institution is executing around the area as well as analogous forestry, eco-voluntaries and ecotourism are compatible according to a zoning and suitable handling of this existing, alternative resources.
3.- PROBLEM SOLVING EVALUATION.
In Peru, it is possible to speak, in general terms, about an absence of social participation in the establishment of protected natural areas, independently of the assigned category.

This civil association is in charge of the protection and conservation of environment through establishment of a practical model to create a supportive and sustainable development in the forests of Manu National park and buffer zone . In addition to, the promotion and creation of conscience about the adapted use of the technology for the rational operation of the essential natural resources for survival of the seated human groups in the area of protection of these fragile forests in risk, of the mountainous chain of the Piñi Piñi River at Buffer Zone of Manu National Park, district and province of Manu).
At the moment it is planned under the concept of “Amaru Mayu Ecological Reserve”, being ASPRIDEQ´ the organization that is in charge of the development for local communities and settlers, the same one that through its Ecological Project Partners, tourist and enterprise, provides the economic activity of the proposal, for the sustainable, environmental and economic sustainability; as an organized and well constituted institution, it requires this management to be defined and supported suitably by the state or governmental institutions.
The conservation in this case presents a strategy, on the basis of ethics where it is recognized that a single supporting and sustainable development can be called development and from there the special importance of this self management of the organized local settlers. It is , perhaps, the most significant innovation and is in this way that the establishment an Amaru Mayu Ecological Reserve destined to integrate the protection and the sustainable use by the own local populations, receives its true dimension.
The Amaru Mayu zone (Atalaya) and areas of influence which characteristics are those of the Humid and High Forest are being depredated or being devastated as a result of the advance of roads, the migration and extension of agricultural borders as escape to the overpopulation of the high land cities and coastline cities.
