ECOTOURISM AND PROGRAMS IN THE MANU NATURAL PARKCODE : AM01 - PROGRAM : MATSIGUENGA MANU 8 days 7 night ITINERARY DAY 1.- CUSCO - AMARU MAYU. We wake up early to leave Cusco and beginning a fast winding ascent onto the Andes mountains. The road eventually winds down to the Paucartambo Colonial Town, where we will briefly stop to stretch legs. Leaving Paucartambo we begin our ascent through eucalyptus groves, cultivated fields, and remnant patches of native vegetation and forty minutes from Paucartambo reaching Acjanaco at 3,500 meter the top of the Eastern Andes cordillera Andes. At this point we have entered ready in Manu Biosphere Reserve, where we are above the clouds gazing below into the lush jungle of the Amazon. As we ascent down from Acjanaco, the baron Paramo starts to change to an elfin forest. Here we will stop for lunch to admire the view, and as we descend further into the cloud forest where the tree canopy covered by mist gives life to numerous epiphytes, moss, luscious green ferns and the high land Bamboo; this area is a natural playground for a vast number of birds, where we make our way to anobservation post, with a little luck, we will be able to watch the fascinating dance of Peru´s National Bird, the Cock-of-the-Rock and hopefully spot the Woolly monkey and immediately after we get Atalaya River port, where we finally arrive to our campsite at 6 or 7 P.m.Where we will spend the night, after a delicius meal we can enjoy the beautiful surroundings before turning for the evening.
DAY 2.- AMARU MAYU - BOCA MANU. At daybreak, we make our depart from Atalaya River Port, at the headwaters of the Alto Madre de Dios River, to the lowland jungle; with a powerful outboard engines boat. From here we have a relaxed journey downstream to Boca Manu. Arriving at Boca Manu town, it is time to take a rest in this beautiful surroundings and walking into a little bit this jungle, before returning our lodge for dinner and we are ready calm lulled into a peaceful sleep by the jungle orchestra tonight.
DAY 3.- BOCA MANU - CASA MATSIGUENKA. Once we have breakfast, we embark the boat in order to go to Manu National Park. touristic Zone (Manu River), were we stop briefly at Limonal, to show our entrance fees, after this we continue navigating and enjoying all that nature always changing capricious during our journey. We shall have lunch in the boat and at the afternoon we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka, where we will be welcome by Matsiguenka people who will show us their place.
DAY 4.- CASA MATSIGUENKA. Today we shall navigate in a catamaran by Salvador Ox-bow lake looking for giant river otters (pteronura brasiliensis) and going through the forest to Casa Matsiguenka, trying to find the spider monkeys (Atheles paniscus) on the way back and the noisy white lipped pecker (Tayassu pecari), restoring our energies with an excellent meals, we continue the rest afternoon in a free stroll time, sharing with these people and relaxing on this special place, sleeping at Casa Matsiguenka once again.
DAY 5.- CASA MATSIGUENKA - BLANQUILLO. Early in the morning we shall board our boat to go to Blanquillo, this place is known for its Macaw clays lick, before stopping briefly at Limonal to register our exit from Touristic Zone, and 40 minutes later briefly technical stop at Boca Manu Town, where it is possible to get different supplies, communications, or other needs. After this we continue by boat still 3 hours more downstream Madre de Dios River, and arriving to Blanquillo Private Reserve, where we get a comfortable and nice place to rest, and preparing for the next early morning activity at Macaws lick.
DAY 6.- BLANQUILLO - YANAYACO. Early in the morning we shall wake up to go by boat to the Macaws Clay Lick and from hide away we will fully enjoy the arrival of hundreds of parrots and parakeets, as the Macaws descend to complete their diet. After this fantastic spectacle, we will continue our river voyage to Yanayaco, Shipitiari, or different optional camping at the area Alto Madre de Dios River, where we shall rest until next day.
DAY 7.- YANAYACO - AMARU MAYU. Next morning, we move head to up streams again the Atalaya river port. On our trip we shall be atonished by the many birds which fly ahead and above us, and before arriving at Atalaya we will briefly stop in Aguas Calientes, where we will relax in an spectacular the hot springs (lunching on board). Once in Atalaya, and after a short stop we will continue upriver to enjoy our last night in Amaru Mayu Reserve. This is a space with special conditions, protection and conservation interest because of its biological diversity, fragility and wealth of its forests. The guide will introduce us in the different projects of protection and conservation running on this zone, sleeping overnight in this ecological Camp.
DAY 8.- AMARU MAYU - CUSCO. After breakfast we shall have our last boat in this jungle and been prepare for our trip back to Cusco. In the road we will make short stops at interesting places such as Pilcopata (short briefly), again at the cloud forest and our last stop at Paucartambo to have a cup of coffee before the arrival to Cusco, where end of our services at your hostels.
